After the first night of wrestling one of our three wrestlers is through to the Quarterfinals and the other two dropped down to the Consolations. In the first match of the night, Locke Hoover quickly gained control of his match against Adairsville and after two periods led 7-4. The Adairsville kid caught back up in the third period and pushed the match to overtime. In the overtime period (sudden death) the Adairsville wrestler took Locke down in the first 30 seconds to win the match. In the second match, Travis Elrod wrestled the #2 wrestler from the West Sectional and put one on him, 9-0. He moves in to the Quarterfinals to meet a Cook County wrestler. In the third match, Jared Hemmings was wrestling the #1 wrestler from the West Sectional from Chattooga and got pinned in the second period. Tomorrow begins another day of wrestling with the first round of Consolations at 9 am and the Quarterfinals at 11:15 am. Come on out if you get a chance to see your Spartans wrestling!

What a great end to the 2008-09 wrestling season! We had three of our wrestlers make it all the way to the state tournament after placing in the top four in our Area and top eight in our Sectional. Sophomore Jared Hemmings (152 lbs) was a first time State Qualifier this year and hopes to return next season and take home a medal. Senior Co-Captain Locke Hoover (119) finished a great wrestling career at the state tournament for the third time. Locke finished 3rd at state in 2007 (as a sophomore). Locke finishes his career with 155 wins and 67 pins. He broke the school record for number of career wins formerly held by his older brother Brett by 25 wins this year. Senior Co-Captain Travis Elrod (130) was the man of the hour this time finishing his wrestling career with a 4th place medal at state. Travis was a 4x State Qualifier and two time State Placer (4th this season and 2nd last season at 119 lbs). Travis also broke the career wins record and finishes his career with 158 wins and 58 pins. Travis now holds the all-time career wins record at GACS. Congratulations to Jared, Locke and Travis!
