Faith - Fireflight's "Unbreakable"

Sometimes as a follower of Christ I forget that my trust is in the 'unseen'. It is so easy for me to fall into the temptation of believing that what is around me is real. That what is around me, what I can see, touch, smell, taste, hear is real. I am reminded today that my faith is in an invisible, all-powerful, all-knowing, omnipresent God. My faith, according to Hebrews 11:1-2, is as the Message puts it, "The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see. The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd."
We live in a fallen world where people choose to drive too fast, run red lights, decide to start smoking/drinking/eating/stop eating, etc. We live in a culture that tells young women they need to be a size 2 and fabulously gorgeous and if they aren't they need to diet or have plastic surgery. We live in a body that is temporal. These bodies get cancer, heart disease, etc. because they are not perfect. Science has prolonged life but not indefinitely. Our bodies only have so much time.
I am reminded of Shanil and Dr. Love. Shanil was a young boy who died in a car accident before his freshman year at my school. I had him in class back in 6th grade. He would have been a senior in high school this year. What a jewel he was. And he's gone. Dr. Love was the chair of the high school math department at my school and he lost the battle to cancer after my 2nd or 3rd year teaching here. He is still recognized by our own math tournament (one of the largest math tournaments in GA) and by an annual award presented by the Georgia Council of Teachers of Mathematics named after him. This award is presented to a teacher in Georgia who models excellence in the profession and in life and gives much to others beyond the classroom as mentor, teacher and leader.
So how are we to live? Because we are not promised another moment on this planet (Prov. 27:1) we need to decide to live for Him. Live for the only thing that matters...loving God and loving our neighbors. What else is there? Truthfully there is a lot more but nothing really worth living for...or dying for.
