Lance Armstrong Foundation

This school year I've set a goal to talk about one organization per month that is helping others by meeting a basic need they have. Christ gives us the greatest example of servanthood when, in John 13, he washes his disciples feet. What a wonderful picture of the creator of the universe getting down on his knees cleaning the feet of mere men. This month I've focused on the Lance Armstrong Foundation.

Lance was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 25 and immediately began radiation treatment. He began this foundation in the midst of his radiation treatment, not knowing if he would be able to continue this or if cancer would take his life. Lance beat cancer and eventually, as of this past July, won seven Tour de France races in a row, a feat no other man has ever done. He is considered to be by many the greatest endurance athlete of our time. He makes a pretty good argument.

The foundation raises money to educate cancer patients and their families and gives money for research. Considering that one in three of us will be diagnosed with cancer in our lifetime and three out of four of our families will deal with someone in our family that has cancer, this research is pretty important. We need to take note of organizations such as this that have a high profile but many of us don't know much about it, besides the infamous yellow bands that say LIVESTRONG on them.
